If you’re looking for a no nonsense steam iron that performs well for a reasonable price you could do a lot worse than the Morphy Richards Turbosteam. It’s a great iron that may not have as many of the bells and whistles as some of the top models, but it also doesn’t come with the same kind of price tag.

Tip Technology

While some other steam irons aim to deliver large amounts of steam throughout the whole plate of the iron the Turbosteam uses what it calls Tip Technology, which essentially means it just focuses all its steam right at the tip of the iron. This does have some drawbacks in the sense that only the small portion of the iron is doing the heavy lifting so it can take a little longer to iron whole garments, but we found it still does a good as long as you lead with the tip.Morphy Richards Turbosteam base plate

Thankfully though, there are also some benefits to the Tip Technology, with the steam focused in one area it’s easy to focus on stubborn creases, as well as using less water so you won’t have to refill the tank as often. On top of the steam tip, the iron has a fine water spray to dampen clothes ahead of ironing them to help generate extra steam.

Steam output

The standard steam output is 35g per minute which can also be boosted up to 120g for particularly tough areas. It is also capable of vertical steaming for use on hanging garments or even curtains if needed.

A non drip system is included which means that even if you start using the iron before it is hot enough it won’t drip water onto the clothes you are ironing. In practice, it does seem to stop any drips coming through, although we did find at that temperature it didn’t do much good on creases.

The iron feels solidly built but it’s not too heavy or unwieldy at 1.2kg, making it easy to move around. The “diamond” ceramic base plate glides well and should last thanks to the fact it won’t rust.

It’s easy to use with not only the heat settings but also some materials marked on the dial in the middle of the iron for quick selection of the right temperature.

The only real issue we found was the power cord was a little on the short side at 1.5m. While it’s not very short, depending on where you are doing your ironing, you may need to use an extension cord.

Price

While it seems a tad expensive at its original price, it can now often be found a lot cheaper and as low as £20 at Amazon, which for an iron of this quality is a steal.
