A superb set of wireless earphones available for an astoundingly low price. If you can ignore the brand name (normally any manufacturer with a Z in the name is a red flag) you won’t find a better pair for even twice the price.
Brainwavz BLU-100 Review
Every now and again a company comes along and totally redefines the quality you can get for a regular price. Nokia did it for mobile phones, Samsung did it for TVs and now Brainwavz has done it for wireless headphones.
That’s not to say you couldn’t pick up a pair for around this price, or even less, before but quality generally ranged from poor to downright awful. What Brainwavz has managed with the BLU-100 is a truly decent set of earphones, Bluetooth ones no less, that cost around £30.
They’re not perfect (neither are many £100+ headphones) but for the price and even for quite a bit more, you won’t find anything that can touch them.
I struggle to remember a time that I was impressed by the sound quality of a £30 pair of earphones but here the BLU-100s are a very pleasant surprise. They produce a clear, detailed sound and while they are lacking a little heft when it comes to bass, the overall effect is what you expect of a pair three times the price.
The high and mid-ranges create well-defined audio where it is easy to pick out the details. Often smaller earphones can create a muddled sound but here you can identify individual instruments even in complicated pieces of music.
Like many other ‘bud’ wireless earphones they are a little bulky as they have to squeeze all the workings and battery into each earpiece. This does mean they can stick out a fair bit when using them but no more than similar Bluetooth earphones.
The earpieces are joined with a short cable that can be cinched closer to the head to prevent pulling and includes a 3 button remote to play and pause, as well as adjust the volume up or down.
They come with 3 sets of different sized ear tips depending on the size of your ears, as well as a set of Comply memory foam tips which is an added bonus – especially at this price.
It also comes with a sturdy carry case, another bonus considering relatively low price.
Battery life is one of the weaker parts of these earphones with only enough power for four hours playback. Fine if you want them for a short commute a couple of times a day but not suitable for all day use without needing some intermittent charging. While this is a shame, again it’s not much of a surprise with so little space for a battery.
Thankfully you don’t need a special charger to top it up as it will work with any microUSB charger.
The price is definitely the biggest feature when it comes to these earphones and we challenge anyone to find a better pair for the price, either wired or wireless.
An excellent pair of fantastically priced earphones, the BLU-100s are a superb choice for occasional use headphones. If you need something that can go all day without charging these are the best, but otherwise we wholeheartedly recommend them.
